Basic questions about us

What is an Angel Dress?

Angel Dresses are tiny handcrafted dresses made from donated wedding gowns, they are gifted to grieving families for their precious baby who was born sleeping, or has not survived an illness or is born premature and don’t make it home from the hospital.

Our seamstresses create a variety of sizes which include; wraps for micro-preemie babies, small for babies before 20 weeks, medium for babies 20-30 weeks, and large for full-term babies.

Do Angel Dresses cost the bereaved family or hospitals any money?

Angel items are gifted to a grieving family or a facility that requests Angel items, any costs incurred Manitoba Angel Dresses will absorb these expenses.

It is an honour for us to provide the gift of an Angel item to any family or hospital requesting them.

Any non-profit providing bereavement services to families can also submit a request through the request form.

How can a family or a facility get an Angel Dress?

Please see the links under “Angel Dress Requests”.  Family and/or facility can contact Manitoba Angel Dresses regarding an Angel item.

Funeral Homes and Hospitals will be stocking Manitoba Angel Dresses Angel items if you know of a specific location that would like to receive Angel items please submit a Request.

I know a family that would like a special colour or requires a special size of Angel Dress. Can you help?

Our seamstress creates Angel items in male/female/neutral/multiple birth. Please be specific in your request what the family would like and we will make every attempt to fill their request.

Are gowns only for little girls?

At Manitoba Angel Dresses our seamstresses create garments for male/female/neutral/multiple births, and we also provide Angel wraps for those babies too small and fragile for gowns.

Volunteering

I can’t sew but would like to volunteer – Do you have anything for me?

Absolutely! We have all sorts of positions that need filling, please complete the Volunteer form and we will be in contact with you within 24 hours. Thank you!

I Crochet or Knit; can I volunteer to make hats or gowns or little blankets?
Yes. Premature and newborn infants have very delicate skin so we are only making items from very soft baby yarns.
I would like to volunteer to sew but my home is not smoke free and/or pet free?

At this time we are unable to accept any seamstress volunteer requests from homes that are not smoke free, your sewing must be both smoke and pet free.

Angel items provided to families that have suffered a loss need to be in a condition that will honour their baby. Also we want to protect our volunteers who may have severe allergies.

Why do I need to be an approved seamstress? I own a machine and want to help.
Our goal is to provide a grieving family the same beautiful Angel items across all of Manitoba. We feel quality and consistency are just as important as quantity. Working with bridal fabrics is challenging. We are always looking for volunteers for other positions. Please have a look at the many positions available and if you don’t see something that interests you please fill in the Volunteer Form and we can have a chat and find something that suits you.
Are patterns provided to volunteer seamstresses?
All patterns for the Angel items are available to the seamstresses, these patterns have been developed by Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurses that have taken into account the fragility of the small infants.
Can I make the Angel Dresses and then drop them off at the hospital myself?

At Manitoba Angel Dresses we have made contact with many of the hospitals and have a procedure in which the Angel items are packaged and distributed to the hospitals. These procedures are to be followed by all the volunteers of Manitoba Angel Dresses. We respectfully request that these procedures be followed, we want to provide the grieving families with the absolute best experience.

If you prefer to provide Angel dresses yourself to hospitals, please understand they cannot be donated under this program’s name.

Can I use my own gown and turn it into dresses?

Yes! We would love for you to do that, however the patterns we provide are to be used. These patterns have been developed specifically for the fragility of the infant.

To Volunteer to be a seamstress click on the Volunteer tab and highlight Seamstress that will take you the page for further information.

Donations

Do you accept cash donations?

Yes! Cash donations can be made through our paypal account. We utilize these donations for shipping, and purchasing of sewing and packaging supplies.

What other donations do you accept?

We are constantly looking for donations of threads (sewing machine and serger), ribbon, laces, embellishments (such as little flowers, little bows, angel wings, butterflies, etc.)

Colours we mainly use are white and off white, ecru, baby blue, soft pinks, greens and yellows.

Is Manitoba Angel Dresses a registered non profit corporation or do you have charitable status?

At this time we are not registered as a non profit corporation or hold charitable status for the following reasons:

  • as this program earns no profits from sales or business activities there is no benefit to becoming a non-profit corporation (which has yearly fees and obligations attached)
  • under CRA regulations, used clothing items are not eligible for a tax receipt. Occasionally Items with a high value are approved however these items must be appraised prior to donation. This added expense in most cases outweighs the cost of the item.
Why does your website have Angel Dress in the name?

Our domain name was chosen and registered based on general suggested guidelines for choosing a webpage name: easy to remember, reference your product, easy to type/spell.

The format chosen also follows the naming trend of other Angel Websites successfully operating in North America and other parts of the world but is different enough as not to confuse multiple programs.

Donating a Wedding Gown

At present we are not accepting Wedding Gowns

Currently we have an abundance of donated gowns and our seamstresses are busy creating Angel items. Once our inventory of Bridal gowns is depleted and we are in need we will put out a call for donations. Please check our Facebook page and Web Site often. You may wish to look into other organizations that are currently taking donations of bridal/bridesmaid gowns. Below are a few groups for bridal/bridesmaid gowns accepting donations.

I want to donate a wedding gown, what happens next?

Complete the “Donate a Gown” form. Once your form is received it will be reviewed and you will be contacted regarding your request. If the gown fits the requirements, arrangements will be made to get your donation to a collector. Thank you for considering our project for your donation!!

All wedding gown donations will be tracked from the time they are donated until the time they are delivered to facilities. We want to ensure all donors have confidence in this process.

What type/colour of gowns will you be accepting for donations?
  • Formal gowns in white, ivory, and cream
  • Formal gowns in light blue tones or pastel colours are also accepted.
  • Donations outside the colours noted will be reviewed at the time of the donation request and based on seamstress needs.
  • Coloured dresses as well as their lace and beading can be used for accenting Angel Dresses; however, only a limited number will be required at a time.
What material should donated gowns be made of?

Preferred fabrics include satin, silk, chiffon, charmeuse, lace or rayon, all materials that are smooth and soft to the touch. Tulle and organza are too rough and not acceptable for the delicate skin of an angel baby.

Do I need to alter my wedding gown in any way prior to donating?

No alterations are necessary, we will be removing the crinoline, underskirts, zippers and buttons upon receiving the dress. This will ensure that the dress is used to make Angel items and not being sold or donated elsewhere.

We have collectors available in all the regions of the province to take in donated gowns, no shipping of gowns will be necessary.

Does my wedding gown need to be cleaned before I donate it?

Yes please we would appreciate it if you would have your dress cleaned prior to donating. You may wish to have it professionally cleaned, but it is not necessary your gown can be washed on a gentle cycle, if you have front loading machine all the better.

We also ask that if you wish a keepsake of your gown to remove a piece before it is dropped off. And lastly we ask that you upload a photo of your gown, perhaps a photo from your special day. When you fill out our online form we will send you instructions on how to do this.

What is the timeline? How long will it take for my dress to be turned into an Angel Dress?

Once your dress has been received into our system it may take 2 to 6 months and this timeline is dependent on the time of year. Remember all our people are volunteers and summer months people are more out and about where as winter months this is when most of our items are created. So patience is appreciated we will update our Facebook page and Website with completed items, please check often.

I would like a keepsake piece of my wedding gown – what do I do?
Please do keep a piece of your gown as a keepsake, we appreciate if this is done prior to drop off.
